The world is changing. We are experiencing extreme weather conditions with increasing frequency, which has both environmental and social impact. The challenges to our society and environment – presenting both risks and opportunities – result in a higher demand for advice to understand the impact on investments.

The Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN)  describes impact investments as “investments made with the intention to generate positive, measurable social and environmental impact alongside a financial return”.

The pressure on investors to adopt a sustainable mindset is also increasing due to various measures being put in place by governments and regulators. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the COP 21 Paris Agreement were the first steps to strengthen the measurement and understanding of non-traditional risks.

Impact investing targets underserved areas of the global economy, such as meeting the needs of the “bottom billion” or critical global problems such as climate change. Each SDG provides a range of impact investment targets; for example, climate action could motivate allocations to renewable energy or green buildings.
